World War II (75th Anniversary of Its Ending)
The War that created the world in which we live. The War that protected the world from one of the worst evils it had ever seen.
For forty-five days, from Monday 20 July to Wednesday 2 September, the Highland Road Park Observatory will celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the end of World War II. This celebration will focus on a number of facets of WWII associated with HRPO's specific mission.

HRPO's End-of-WWII celebration begins modestly tonight...
*a slideshow
*a small display at the Wormhole (for display only; not for sale)
[Tonight is also the fifty-first anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, HRPO's third night to attempt a view of Comet NEOWISE (the first two attempts were successes) and this year's Saturnian Opposition.]

Also, the end of World War II ushered in the so-called "Atomic Age" of optimism, new energy sources and new concerns. HRPO is presenting a remote Science Academy session on Saturday 8 August at 10am. The session is for eight- to twelve-year-olds and cost five dollars per EBR-parish kid and six dollars per other-parish kids. One should use WebTrac and enter the activity number 531990. If the session cannot be found call 768-9948.

HRPO's display premiere dates have been moved up; all displays will have their premieres between 8 August and 11 August. With possible alterations and additions, they will remain for public view until their dismantling on 4 and 5 September. A new display announcement section will be at the official HRPO site:

Re: World War II (75th Anniversary of Its Ending)
HRPO has expanded its texts display for the End of WWII celebration. Also there is now a WWII-related package inside the Wormhole: a copy of Hasbro's Mission Command (Air) and a classic unbuilt North American P51D Mustang from the Otaki company...

Re: World War II (75th Anniversary of Its Ending)
HRPO has extended its WWII celebration to Saturday 5 September, partially due to inclement weather this week and partially to coincide with the conjunction of the Moon and Mars that takes place on the fifth.

Re: World War II (75th Anniversary of Its Ending)
As with HRPO’s other current Program Aides, James DeOliveira began his career at the facility as a kid. He attended several Rocket Camps, obtained the coveted Galactic Plaque in Science Academy and will serve as the 2021 Summer Camp Director. Taking a break from his studies at Marion Military Institute, he put together two incredible new presentations detailing two of the most memorable incidents of WWII: “HMS Hood—Pride of an Empire” (Friday 30 April at 6:30pm) and “KMS Bismarck—Enemy of an Empire” (Friday 7 May at 6:30pm). The stories will be used to describe the importance of celestial navigation and radio in defeating the Axis and preserving the U.S. Bill of Rights. The presentations have no admission fee and are aimed at a general adult audience.
