Pi Day is celebrated annually on March 14th (because Pi = ~3.14. Get it?) Well, Pi Day is tomorrow and the Highland Road Park Observatory will host a Pi Day-themed Plus Night. HRPO personnel will introduce patrons to math-based games such as Nim and Sprouts. Of course, there will also be pie--the edible variety.
The event lasts from 7pm to 10pm; it is for all ages.

Ha! That's excellent, Chris...I've never seen that one.
Pi Day was very well-received Saturday night. HRPO had sixty-eight patrons (adults and children). We actually did eat some pie--including key lime and lemon box--and played games like Nim and Sprouts. Galactic Cadet Taylor began his Apprenticeship, and Program Aide Hayley's younger brother Holden was a formidable Sprouts opponent. Roslyn and I battled it out in two games of Nim; she won one and I won one. Marvin Owen was the 20OGS operator; he reported that dome operations ran smoothly.

HRPO personnel have programmed a standalone session of Science Academy to focus on Pi Day, with a purposeful expansion into other aspects of math and how it is used as a tool to unlock space travel. Cadets will study not only Pi but other special numbers like the “natural number” and the Hubble Constant, relationships like the Golden Ratio, games like the legendary game Nim, magic squares, Life...and they will receive a special all-numbers puzzle to obtain extra door prize tickets. The Pi Day session is (of course) on Saturday 14 March from 10am to 12pm. The session is for kids eight- to twelve-years of age. The cost is five dollars per EBR-parish kid and six dollars per other-parish kid.

Have fun with pi today. Have fun with pi a year from today. At this time I know pi by heart to seven decimal places--3.1415926.
Along with nanotechnology materials, pi materials will be present during HRPO's March Plus Night on the 25th from 7pm to 10pm. HRPO's classic 2009 Pi Day display will be reintroduced with updates.
