Post by Christopher K. »

Several hours ago there was an R1 alert from the Space Weather Prediction Center. According to the SWPC this alert is sent out when there is the possibility of weak or minor degradation of high-frequency radio communication on sunlit side of the Earth, occasional loss of radio contact and brief degradation of low-frequency navigation signals.

Tuesday 21 December: R1

R1 conditions arrived within the previous twenty-four hours. Does this first day of Winter bring an early clue regarding solar activity in 2022? An M1 X-ray flare occurred at 5:36am CST. The SWPC is monitoring conditions.

Wednesday 22 December: R1

R1 conditions arrived yet again, within the previous twenty-four hours. HRPO policy calls for a special session of solar viewing if a geomagnetic storm alert, radio blackout alert or solar radiation storm alert occurs simultaneously with any declared Active Region on the Earth-facing side of the Sun, and that activity can be visually confirmed.

Such is the case this week. There will be a special session at HRPO tomorrow from 11am to 1pm...
