The I-10 Corridor Improvement Study, Stage 0 Feasibility Study (SPN H.004100.1 Legacy Project Number 700-17-0209) will give the public the chance for input.

This might be a very good opportunity for BRAS members and other concerning parties to addressed the issue of the outrageously high and/or poorly-capped lighting prevalent along so much of the I-10 highway from Henderson to Hammond.

Open house public meetings will occur at the following locations...
*Monday 22 February (6pm to 8pm) at McKinley Middle Magnet School, 1550 Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive
*Tuesday 23 February (6pm to 8pm) at Addis Community Center, 7520 Highway 1 South
*Thursday 25 February (6pm to 8pm) at Baton Rouge Marriott, 5500 Hilton Drive
Members of the public can show up at any time. The same information will be presented at all three meetings.

Needless to say, the Addis meeting was cancelled due to that intense storm system. I don't know if it'll be rescheduled. The Marriott meeting is still taking place tonight.

I attended the Marriott location meeting last night. There was a slideshow presentation followed by an open house. I spoke to someone from DOTD and someone from one of the consulting firms. I also filled out a comment sheet. I mentioned that BRAS has assisted with the discovery of over forty asteroids, and that the organization has promoted STEM education for the past thirty years. I mentioned that we would like to continue that promotion for the next thirty years, but only if we have access to a natural sky! I mentioned that uncapped night lighting can go into drivers' eyes, hinder the behavior of nocturnal animals and waste fossil fuels--but that BRAS' main concern was the loss of the view of deep-sky objects.

BRAS member Susan M. emailed her comments. The deadline for comments has been extended until 19 March. Also, the Addis meeting's new date is 9 March; it will still be from 6pm to 8pm, still at the same location.

The I-10 BR Project Open House will occur at the Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center (950 East Washington Street) on Thursday 19 August from 6pm to 7:30pm. This meeting will allow taxpayers to give input regarding a "greenway corridor and park improvements alongside and beneath I-10 through Old South Baton Rouge". As these plans for the future may include changing or adding outdoor nighttime lighting, anyone interested in preserve what natural sky there is in the area, and even perhaps reclaiming some that has been lost, should make his opinion known.

As always, feedback from natural sky enthusiasts can go a long way to reversing the current situation in town. The poll is live through Halloween.
