Halo around the Moon

I actually saw another one on the 3rd (the next night) though it wasn't as well-defined. I know, I know Fred and Chris--pictures, pictures. Unfortunately I don't have experienced getting both a very bright object and a halo together in the same image.

Don't fret over the pictures. I've never been able to get a halo around the Moon either. It's just too large an object and has such a high dynamic range to fit my cameras field of view or to capture both without blowing out the exposure of the Moon itself. To capture it would take a wide angle lens and shooting multiple exposures of different lengths then combining them as layer masks, a task that can get tricky.

The 13 February APOD shows a lunar halo captured twelve days earlier on Jökulsárlón Beach in Iceland. There are also aurorae in the image. (I didn't see any halos during this past Baton Rouge winter.)

Temporary citizens of Antarctica may not have a wide variety of objects to view, but at least they got a halo around July's Blue Moon. I haven't seen one in a while so I'll be looking this winter.

I neglected to mention it right away, but earlier this year I saw a halo around the Moon through somewhat thin clouds. The halo reached all the way down to where Jupiter was at that time.

The clouds are rather thick, but during this nippy night I do spot the ghostly outline of a lunar halo. Would anyone like to go out and confirm?

As of 9:54pm CST there is yet another lunar halo. This one is much more prominent than the last one I thought I saw. There's no mistaking it; Roz, Jordan, Hayley and I can see it.

And yet another! Last night while out walking in Baker I saw the twenty-two-degree-halo effect once more. It never gets old! I believe Tom got some good shots.

Nice halo a few hours ago seen from here in Baker...very possibly the last one of the winter. The halo shone through a thin cloud deck that covered the sky.

Nice halo about 11:15pm from Baker...first one since the pre-winter cold has rolled in. Keep eyes open and heads up. Many more to come.
