617 Patroclus

Small pieces of rock, with a big influence (just ask the dinosaurs).

617 Patroclus

Post by Christopher K. »

The second of Jupiter’s Trojans to be discovered (by August Kopff in 1906), Patroclus was found in 2001 to have a companion, eventually named Menoetius. The Lucy mission is expected to fly by this pair in March 2033. A stellar occultation of Patroclus was visible from the Los Angeles area among other places on Earth. Among the amateurs who made observations was the actor Tim Russ.
