HRPO Evening Sky Viewing, 2020

The last open Friday of HRPO’s calendar is devoted to premiering much of the 2020 schedule (lectures, camps, celestial events, special programs, classes and guests). Weather permitting, viewing of Venus, Uranus, Neptune, Vesta, Sirius, the Pleiades, the Hyades, the Orion Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Perseus Double Cluster, Delphinus the Dolphin and the “Kids” of Auriga will take place. Four visible passes are predicted.

The first lecture of 2020 is titled "2019--The Space Year in Review". It starts at 7:30pm.

Below is the NOAA forecast for HRPO's viewing time of 8:30pm to 10pm...

Danko's Clear Dark Sky states that during HRPO's viewing time the transparency rating will be "average" (3 out of 5) and the seeing rating will be "poor" (2 out of 5). This evening's 20OGS operator was to be BRAS member Merrill Hess. However, there will be no viewing and HRPO will close at 9:30pm. If it begins to rain or is raining anytime after 8:30pm, HRPO will close sooner.

Front Desk Videos will include footage and documentaries regarding the legendary Gemini and Apollo missions, and news about the upcoming Mars 2020 Rover. NASA-TV will rebroadcast "SpaceCast Weekly" at 8:30pm.

NOAA has issued a Wind Advisory to be in effect from 6pm this evening until 3pm tomorrow afternoon...

NOAA has issued also a Hazardous Weather Outlook that mentions the "main threat being damaging winds and possibly an isolated tornado" for today and tonight...

Accordingly, HRPO programming is canceled for tonight and tomorrow morning. This includes...
*tonight's Friday Night Lecture "Wonders of the Winter Sky"
*tonight's Evening Sky Viewing from 8:30pm to 10pm
*tomorrow's Science Academy "Winter Day"

17 January: "Earth to Moon to Mars"
24 January: "Wonders of the Winter Sky"
31 January: "Comet after Comet"
The Daylight Time lecture will be moved to February; the Winter Day Science Academy session will not be repeated.

This evening's 20OGS operator was to be LSU physics professor Greg Stacy. However, the 20OGS will not be utilized. Viewing will be attempted at the front pad. HRPO will close at 9:45pm. If it begins to rain or is raining anytime after 8:30pm, HRPO will close sooner.

Due to the current rainstorm, HRPO will be closed tonight after our Learn Your Sky class ends at 7:30pm. The next sky viewing session is scheduled for Friday 24 January from 8:30pm to 10pm.
