On Thursday the Space Shuttle Program conducted its last test of a reusable solid rocket motor. The testing was in Promontory, Utah; it was the fifty-second conducted for NASA by ATK Launch Systems, which has more than 18,000 employees.

Each motor is a little over 38 meters long and almost four meters in diameter. The first test was in July 1977. Since 1988, 210 RSRMs have flown on 105 shuttle missions.

There are four shuttle missions remaining.

ATK's Space System headquarters is in Magna, Utah. Earlier this month ATK delivered the Orion launch abort system attitude control motor from Elkton, Maryland to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico for NASA's upcoming pad abort flight test. PA-1 is the first flight test for NASA’s Orion crew exploration vehicle being developed by Lockheed Martin. It is slated to be (if funding continues) the next space flight vehicle to carry out missions in low Earth orbit and allow human beings to further explore the Moon.

As the Endeavour approached the ISS to deliver the Tranquility Module, the Expedition 22 imaged its shadowed form against the multicolored layers of the Earth's atmosphere. This image was the 3 August APOD.
