Veterans Day

Post by Christopher K. » November 11th, 2013, 10:28 pm

I hope all United States Veterans had a good day today. I know several businesses were offering "freebies" and discounts. I don't know how many BRAS members are veterans, although I know Wally and Geoff are. I never served in the military; my parrain was in the Navy and I'm sure the rest of my mother's family is as proud of him as I am.

In addition to putting their lives on the line and protecting our great country's freedom, veterans have served in another wonderful, important and inspiring capacity...as astronauts. The list of late military people alone who were also astronauts include, but are not limited to...
Neil Armstrong (naval aviator from 1949 to 1952)
Scott Carpenter (designated a naval aviator in April 1951)
Roger Chaffee (United States Navy Lieutenant Commander, entered the Navy in 1957)
Charles Conrad (awarded two Navy Distinguished Service Medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses)
Gordon Cooper (awarded the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross)
Donn Eisele (graduated from the United States Naval Academy and chose a career in the Air Force)
Ronald Evans (awarded eight Air Medals and the Viet Nam Service Medal)
James Irwin (Air Force Colonel)
Stuart Roosa (retired as a Colonel from the Air Force in 1976)
Virgil "Gus" Grissom (an Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, received his wings in March 1951)
Walter Schirra (awarded the U.S. Navy Distinguished Service Medal)
Alan Shepherd (Navy Rear Admiral)
"Deke" Slayton (flew 56 combat missions in Europe during WWII)
Edward White (Air Force Lieutenant Colonel)

Thanks to all our veterans!

This Veterans Day has a special treat. The Transit of Mercury begins in a few minutes. If you want to see it live, your best chance is between 8am and 12pm today at the Highland Road Park Observatory...
