2018 Chemical Rocket Launches

Post by Christopher K. » February 5th, 2018, 3:17 pm

There will be a launch of an Estes Mongoose at HRPO on Saturday 24 February at 5:30pm, during the annual NanoDays celebration. This will be the launch for the winning bidder for the latest Rocket Range bid round. The bidders must all be at least eighteen years of age; the person who presses the launch button must be at least eight years old. All winning Rocket Range bids go to the BREC Foundation donation account for the Highland Road Park Observatory.

Though the Mongoose is a two-stage rocket, it can only be launched as a one-stage from HRPO property. However, the winning bidder will take both stages home.

HRPO's Spring Rocket Camp takes place on Tuesday 3 April and Wednesday 4 April, 8am to 5pm each day. Kids must be nine- to thirteen-years-old.

The session will focus on each "rocketeer" construction and launching a two-stage Estes Mongoose chemical rocket (like the one for bid that will be launched during NanoDays).

Spring Rocket Camp is Tuesday and Wednesday. There are still openings left. In addition to the rocket construction and launch there will be a transit simulation. The Camp theme is "Exoplanets".

If there is a bid from someone (and that someone arrives) there will be a launch of an E2X rocket on Saturday 17 November at HRPO, at the beginning of a planned solar viewing session at 12pm. The bidder must be at least eighteen; the launcher must be at least eight.

On Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 November, the inaugural Space Exploration Camp takes place at HRPO. The Camp runs 8am to 5pm daily and is for nine- to thirteen-year-olds. This Camp is supplanting the Rocket Camps, which have been retired. However, two chemical rockets will be built and launched at this Camp as well; the two for Fall 2018 are the Quark and the Viking. The Camp costs $57 per EBR-parish kid and $68.40 per other-parish kid. Registration is in progress...

HRPO has acquired a minimum count for the Fall Space Exploration Camp--it will take place. The good people at Hobby Towne have informed HRPO personnel that the Viking has been discontinued. Therefore, the two chemical rockets will be the Mosquito and the Viking.

Next month is HRPO's second Space Exploration Camp, which supplants the old Rocket Camps that took place during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter breaks. The Winter Space Exploration Camp will take place Thursday 20 December and Friday 21 December, 8am to 5pm each day. The camp will cover...
*the use of computers in space exploration
*building and launching two chemical rockets (the Spaceloft and the Alpha III)
*how to view the Quadrantid meteor shower
The Camp is for nine- to thirteen-year-olds. The cost for both days is $57.00 per EBR-parish child and $68.40 per other-parish child. All equipment and materials for the activities will be provided.
