2017 Baton Rouge Zoo Public Input Meetings

Post by Christopher K. » July 11th, 2017, 2:15 pm

BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight and Baton Rouge Zoo Director Phil Frost are asking for input concerning the possibility of moving the Baton Rouge Zoo from its current Thomas Road location.

As with all of these situations, the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society does not take a stance on whether any discussed new or updated construction in the HRPO service area should take place. All that BRAS asks is that if it does take place, healthy and appropriate guidelines concerning outdoor lighting be followed--namely...
(1) Outdoor lighting should be installed only if it is necessary.
(2) Outdoor lighting should be full cut-off, which should result in it lighting only its intended target.
(3) Outdoor lighting should be only as bright as needed, meaning no harsh metal halide or mercury vapor--only yellow-amber LED or low-pressure sodium vapor.

BREC has programmed six input meetings over the next forty-five days. Anyone truly interested in returning the Baton Rouge area to a natural sky illumination should either attend one of these meetings or give input to BREC via phone call, email or personal visit to BREC Headquarters at 7711 Goodwood Boulevard.

The upcoming Zoo Input Meetings are at 6pm at the following locations...
Tuesday 11 July, Perkins Road Community Park (7122 Perkins Road)
Thursday 13 July, Highland Road Community Park (14024 North Amiss Road)
Tuesday 1 August, Central Community Library (11260 Joor Road)
Thursday 3 August, Zachary Community Library (1900 Church Street)
Tuesday 8 August, Independence Park Theatre (7800 Independence Boulevard)
Monday 14 August, Greenwood Waterfront Theater (13350 Highway 19)
