2020 Light Pollution Committee Meetings

Post by Christopher K. »

The next Light Pollution Committee meeting will be on Wednesday 8 January from 6:15 pm to 7pm at the Highland Road Park Observatory. (New visitors will be received as early as 6pm.)

We will be focusing on at least two areas of discussion:
1) the statement from BRAS soon to be issued to the University Lakes Project
2) a recounting of the HRPO Manager regarding stray security light from neighbors hitting his family's property, and the kind response he received when he alerted them to the problem

Most recent publicly-released minutes of the LPC:

All LPC meetings are open to the public; if you live in or near Baton Rouge, please come. With your help, we can bring back natural contrast skies over the Highland Road Park Observatory and the surrounding areas.

The next Light Pollution Committee meeting will be on Wednesday 5 February from 6:15 pm to 7pm at the Highland Road Park Observatory. (New visitors will be received as early as 6pm.)

Last month, the Committee discussed the delay of the new light pollution diorama. Also mentioned was a renewed committment to choose goals that were concrete and attainable. The BRAS members present are now looking at incorporating good lighting desires and requests into the upcoming HRPO Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with BREC and LSU.

The next Light Pollution Committee meeting will be on Wednesday 4 March from 6:15 pm to 7pm at the Highland Road Park Observatory. (New visitors will be received as early as 6pm.)

This will be a busy agenda. Updates on two important initiatives will occur...
*connecting with local Young Astronaut Clubs; and with Earth Science, Physical Science, Physics I, Physics II and Astronomy course teachers.
*final development of the schedule for approaching municipalities within the HRPO service area.

The upcoming Light Pollution Committee meeting on 8 April will now be replaced by an email thread or teleconference for any BRAS members who are interested. However, the general public can still give input by contact HRPO or by responding to this Forum thread.

Baton Rouge Astronomical Society officers have decided to forgo the Light Pollution Commitee meeting for tonight. However, Merrill and Craig can still take questions and concerns...

BRAS remains committed to eradicating the light pollution in the greater Baton Rouge area, especially in this time where many of us must skygaze from home. A view of the natural sky is a birthright!

The first Light Pollution Committee meeting after the virus outbreak shutdown is scheduled tentatively for Wednesday 6 May, 7pm at the Highland Road Park Observatory. The agenda provided by Observing Chairman John Nagle will begin at 6:15pm. A special late-evening field trip for the Girl Scouts will be wrapping up at 5:30pm, but should not interfere.

For the first time since the virus shutdown and response, there will be a Light Pollution Committee meeting, albeit remotely.

<Instructions for joining meeting removed after meeting.>

The officership of the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society has decided that Light Pollution Committee meetings will now take place two Wednesdays before the organization's general public meeting. The public meetings take place on the second Mondays, which this month puts it the latest it can be: Monday the 14th. That means September's LPC meeting is tomorrow night, Wednesday the 2nd at 6pm. Any interested parties should go to meet.jit.si and use the room name "BRASLPC".
