This coming spring's HGSP takes place from 18 March to 22 March. Come January take a look at spring responsibilities and free time, and consider joining us in Florien.

Well...Ben, Ashley and I just booked our digs for Hodges. Florien is approximately three-and-a-half to four hours from Baton Rouge and the beautiful Hodges Gardens is well worth the trip. The total reservable facilities there include (but are not limited to) nine standard cabins, two deluxe cabins and nine tent campsites. Of course, tenting is allowed on the viewing field as well. Additionally, there are fairly close hotels and motels.

The Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum is in Hemphill, Texas. It is across the state line from Hodges Gardens, and only forty to forty-five minutes driving time. The museum is small but when I was last there (two years ago), the staff had maximized use of the area. I strongly encourage all who are going to the HGSP to spend some daylight time at this museum.

BRAS HGSP Coordinator Don Weinell has informed the club that vacant cabins during the week of the Party are all but gone. The alternate lodgings list posted on 15 January should be an even more important good resource now. Though weather forecasts are more and more inaccurate the earlier they come, I'll start looking at the Florien forecast this Wednesday.

One important note concerning the HGSP: please remember that Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights are nights for which participants incur a fee. Adults are $10 each; children under eighteen are free. Saturday night is for the general public, although said public still must pay admission to the Park itself.

The forecast will probably change at least slightly before Wednesday, but right now NOAA's forecast for Wednesday night doesn't lend itself to skygazing. If it doesn't change I won't leave town until Thursday morning.

This is really sad news. The forecast is so counter to that needed for sky viewing that both Ben and I have decided to sit out this year.

This is the current NOAA forecast for Florien, for 11pm CDT nightly...

Wednesday, 18 March
precipitation potential, 40%
sky cover, 75%
relative humidity, 77%

Thursday, 19 March
precipitation potential, 20%
sky cover, 60%
relative humidity, 80%

Friday, 20 March
precipitation potential, 70%
sky cover, 99%
relative humidity, 89%

Saturday, 21 March
precipitation potential, 40%
sky cover, 97%
relative humidity, 92%

See what I mean? I had hoped to nab the Crab Nebula, among other tasks. I guess I'll get someone to go out to Ramah with me; I think either Chad or Trey were wanting to go as well.

Confirmation of the poor skies at the HGSP came to me from those who actually went--Roslyn, Karen and Trey. No more than "sucker holes" appeared at various points, if it wasn't outright raining!
