LIGO's next Science Saturday is tomorrow from 1pm to 5pm; the theme is "Inquiring Minds". That's ironic, since I'll bet a lot of visitors will be inquiring about these rumors!

My daughter Rebekah and I attended LIGO's open house this past Saturday. I spoke with Kathy Holt and others on staff there at LIGO and their response to the rumors in the media was pretty much what one should expect from the science community. Kathy even expressed a bit of consternation with the situation and asserted that is not how science is done. She also stated that it would be a matter of weeks before all the data is analyzed and a conclusion could be reached. As far as I am concerned, nothing more needs to be said until LIGO reveals their own findings.

Dr. Amber Stuver will return to the Highland Road Park Observatory on 19 February at 7:30pm for her annual talk "LIGO--The Search for Gravitational Waves". The talk has no admission fee and is aimed at a general adult audience. Although the rumors concerning LIGO are still being repeated at this time, Dr. Stuver will probably not be able to confirm or deny them.

Which, of course, means that Amber might just be talking about the latest news.

Advanced LIGO ended its first run on 12 January...

...which may be the reason LIGO staff waited until this month for any release of information.

The announcement, as Fred says, will be Thursday at 9:30am CST at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. There will probably be a gathering at LIGO itself, though I don't know if the gathering will be public. Brad Schaefer says there will be a gathering somewhere in Nicholson Hall. Center Supervisor Tom Northrop will attempt to acquire a live stream for showing at the Highland Road Park Observatory.
