The Concept of the "Birth Star"

Post by Christopher K. »

A birth star is a star whose light, at any particular time during your life, is reaching Earth after traveling about the same amount of time you've been alive. Therefore, you're seeing the star as it appeared around the time of your birth. So a current birth star is as far away in light-years as the number of years you've been alive.

The first HRPO lecture to talk about this concept was in May. The lecture repeats on Friday 14 December at 7:30pm. The talk will be aimed at a general adult audience; there is no admission fee.

Beginning with the fall season, HRPO patrons will notice that the mission of HRPO (to bring astronomy to the people and make the experience meaningful) will be pursued with renewed vigor and enthusiasm. It almost will be as though HRPO is having a second birth...

In keeping with that theme, the first lecture of the season (Friday 27 September at 7:30pm) will be the third version of the wonderful "Our Birth Stars" talk.

On Friday 26 February, "Our Birth Stars" will be delivered as a remote presentation for the first time. This talk was last delivered in September 2019. A major section will have brief biographies of some of the stars.
