Planetary System discovered!

Post by Tom » August 24th, 2010, 10:58 am

A Sun-like star HD 10180 in the little known constellation Hydrus has been determined to have six confirmed planets by Kepler, a spacecraft designed to detect potentially life-supporting planets around other stars, and possibly more! NASA will be making a big announcement Thrusday and I am sure there will be more information.

I just finished listening to the announcement from NASA from the Kepler observatory. Kepler has confirmed the existence of two confirmed Saturn sized planets in a planetary system located in the constellation Lyra. There is also report of a third possible planet outside the orbit of the two others (Kepler 9B and Kepler 9C) that is only about one and half times the size of Earth. If it is indeed a planet, it would the smallest one discovered so far outside our own system.

For several years Jordan Cobbs has been the host for patrons visiting the 20OGS at HRPO. On Friday 6 April at 7:30pm he will give his first HRPO talk--"Exoplanets"! Jordan will cover the research into exoplanets and provide some notable examples. The talk is for a general adult audience and there is no admission fee.
