C/2010 X1 (Elenin)

Post by Christopher K. » August 31st, 2011, 6:46 pm

NEO has posted commonly-asked (and odd) questions concerning Comet Elenin. One wonders what flights of imagination are soaring on the internet when Discovery feels compelled to post an article entitled "Comet Elenin Won't Kill Us, Says NASA".

Meanwhile, Sky and Telescope is reporting Elenin may have disintegrated. Michael Mattiazzo claims it dropped a half-magnitude over a very brief period (19 August to 20 August). As the comet is in Virgo at the time, we in the northern hemisphere have to rely on those "below" us to find out exactly what's going on with Elenin.

Well, it's official. RIP Elenin.

JPL's Don Yeomans, according to the article below, stated comets skirting the Sun disintegrate about 2% of the time.
