The Geminid meteor shower will occur soon, and once again HRPO will open during the peak nighttime period which at this time is slated for 13/14 December. The Highland Road Park Observatory will be open on Tuesday 13 December from 9pm to 1am for public viewing. Sadly, the waxing gibbous Moon will be in the constellation Taurus and therefore will be above the horizon for the entire viewing time. All participants in this viewing event must follow city ordinances, park rules and personnel instructions while on observatory property.

Below is NOAA's current forecast for HRPO's viewing time of 9pm to 1am this Tuesday night...
precipitation potential, 30%
sky cover, 78%
relative humidity, 95%
temperature, 11˚C
surface wind, NE 13 km/h

It doesn't look good, does it? HRPO will not make an official decision until Tuesday night at 6pm. Until then, let's hope for an improvement in the forecast.

Danko's Clear Dark Sky states that during HRPO's viewing time the transparency rating will be "too cloudy" (0 out of 5) and the seeing rating will be "average" (3 out of 5). HRPO will open for the Geminid meteor shower until 12am. If it rains any time after 9pm, HRPO will close immediately.

The 13 December 2016 rating is...
EXCELLENT
VERY GOOD
GOOD
FAIR
POOR
BAD

It has begun to rain. HRPO is now closed.

There were a few visitors, but I believe most people knew there was little hope to see the Moon, much less any Geminids.
