Halo Around the Sun

Post by Christopher K. »

A gentleman has called HRPO to report seeing a halo around the Sun, which he described as rainbow-colored. This is almost certainly the famous "22˚ halo". I have seen the twenty-two-degree halo several times around the Moon, but never the Sun. This phenomenon may be very location-specific, meaning that one person may see it but another just a few kilometers away would not.

When the witness called the Sun was 32˚ up in the southwest. Calvert's site at the University of Denver states that around that altitude an arc segment can be seen at zenith. Therefore, I went out again just now to check. I saw nothing at zenith, but saw a bright spot in the sky to the south of the Sun, which I took to be a sun dog, though I'm not sure.

Successful spotting of haloes relies mainly on the state of your atmosphere. The state of the atmosphere in December 2018 Sweden gave a lucky witness something to remember...

As alternative to standard Summer Camp, Highland Road Park Observatory is researching the possibility of offering remote ninety-minute modules. If the idea gains traction, one such module will be a youth version of "Space Weather". Campers will learn how the Sun influences our weather and produces phenomena such as aurorae and haloes. They will learn about the weird weather on other bodies of the Solar System—cold geysers, hexagon-shaped storms and incredibly strong winds. This module would be offered Fridays at 1pm and 3pm. Specific weeks of offerings, age ranges, prices and registration procedure will be found at...
