Apollo 1 (Apollo 204)

Post by Christopher K. » December 28th, 2016, 5:27 pm

"Gus" Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were lost on 27 January 1967 when fire swept through the practice capsule in which they were reviewing procedures. The crew and mission were posthumously designed Apollo 1. A patch was designed and is unofficially known as the "Patch that Never Flew".

On Friday 27 January at 7:30pm the Highland Road Park Observatory will present the lecture "Apollo 1 Fiftieth Anniversary". The speaker will be BREC Center Supervisor Tom Northrop. The talk has no admission fee and is aimed at a general adult audience.

Tomorrow at 10am CST both NASA-TVs will air an Apollo 1 memorial program. The program will air later that day at 12pm CST. I do not know the content of the program but it probably would be a good introduction to Tom's talk tomorrow night.

Keep in mind, tomorrow night's talk is the first of the Apollo 50th Anniversary Lectures. Yes--it's been fifty years!

Today at 12:30pm CDT (right now), NASA-TV will broadcast "The Journeys of Apollo", a documentary created for the fortieth anniversary of Apollo. It will be rebroadcast at 2pm CDT and at 6:30pm CDT.
