50th Anniversary of Kennedy Speech at Rice University

Post by Christopher K. »

On 12 September 1962 President Kennedy delivered his now-famous speech while visiting Rice University.

In The Case for Mars by Robert Zubrin and Richard Wagner, it's stated that the way we got to the Moon was by the President of United States standing before the people and announcing it's what we needed to do. One passage reads, "When I reread Kennedy's Apollo speeches, a sense of his greatness comes through that is unmatched by any twentieth-century orator, except perhaps Winston Churchill."

Tomorrow at 10:15am CDT the speech in its entirety will be broadcast on NASA TV.

About the Gateway:

As as alternative to standard Summer Camp, Highland Road Park Observatory is researching the possibility of offering remote ninety-minute modules. If the idea gains traction, one such module will be "Moon Missions". Campers will learn about the past lunar missions such as Ranger and Apollo, and the future Gateway being constructed as a lunar stopover. They will identify craters, domes and old lava beds of interest on the Moon. They will design a future mission. This module would be offered Wednesdays at 1pm and 3pm. Specific weeks of offerings, age ranges, prices and registration procedure will be found at...
