Volcanism

Post by Christopher K. »

Volcanoes, both active and dormant, pepper various locations of our Solar System. Outlets for internal heat and material are present from the Earth to Mercury, Venus, Io and Titan...and some are monstrous!

BRAS Outreach Coordinator Trevor McGuire will present a brand-new HRPO lecture on volcanism in the Solar System on Friday, 31 January at 7:30pm.

Fresh lava, nasty light pollution and stars not seen from Baton Rouge. Diego Rizzo's picture from February caught Guatemala's Volcano of Fire in action. I wonder how far away he was.

A brand-new cycle of sessions is premiering in August for HRPO's Science Academy!

Each session runs from 10am to noon. Here are the dates...
11 August: "Volcanoes--The Types"
18 August: "Volcanoes--The Risks"
25 August: "Volcanoes--Other Worlds"

The cost for each session will be five dollars for each child who lives in East Baton Rouge Parish, and six dollars for each child who lives outside of East Baton Rouge Parish. Parents can pay up to two weeks ahead of time for each session, either in person at HRPO or over the phone (as long the card used is in his or her name) or online via WebTrac. The child must be eight to twelve years of age.

New evidence is being uncovered that volcanoes on Venus may still be active, particularly Idunn Mons. If this is the case, could a new probe to flyby Venus perhaps reveal the merging of volcanic output and regular cloud banks?
