Great Martian Apparition of 2020-2021

Post by Christopher K. »

Early tomorrow morning, Mars will be rising in the souteast within one degree of mag 2.8 Zubenelgenubi! The star will only be six degrees up at 4:47am and twilight begins at 5:26am. Not a bad start for this Martian apparition. Good luck!

The 2020 apparition of Mars is progress will that kind of steady and slow suspense to which skygazers are accustomed. This morning at 4:36am, Mars exited Libra and entered Scorpius, where it will reside for about a week.

As the next ten months progress, it will rise earlier and earlier, getting bigger and brighter. Finally, during the first half of October, Mars will appear bigger and brighter than it will for the next fifteen years!

We should have nice skies from midnight to 2am. Go out and glimpse Mars rising in the east. It will be at least as bright as magnitude -1.5, the same brightness as Sirius!

Below is the NOAA forecast for HRPO's planned viewing time of 10:45pm tonight to 12:15am tomorrow morning...
precipitation potential, 9%
sky cover, 40%
relative humidity, 80%
temperature, 27˚C
heat index, 28˚C
surface wind, N 4 km/h

Danko's Clear Dark Sky states that during HRPO's viewing time both the transparency rating and the seeing rating will be "too cloudy to forecast" (0 out of 5). The 20OGS and 16OGS domes will be closed to the public until the six-foot rule is abolished

No sky rating will be given for this event due to disparate data.

If you're seeing Mars tonight, you're seeing the first night that the Red Planet is shining at magnitude -2.0. It will retain at least this level of brightness at least through 4 November. Inform your family, friends and coworkers of this opportunity.

HRPO's final Remote Discussion regarding the Great Martian Apparition will take place on Friday 25 September at 6:30pm. This event will focus more on the equipment needed to see Mars in the coming weeks, and where to find that equipment--or find someone who has it.
