The United States Power Grid

Post by Christopher K. »

There are several different ways entire sections of our nation’s Grid can be damaged or destroyed. Indeed, it’s happened before at least on a small scale. What about a large-scale event? Many experts believe it’s a matter of when, not if. Are we prepared? The Highland Road Park Observatory will have a lecture on this crucial subject on Friday 16 February at 7:30pm. The talk is aimed at a general adult audience and there is no admission fee.

Lisa Calhoun has penned Superflare, a novel concerning the rough situation endured by a rural Louisiana family in the immediate aftermath of damaging coronal mass ejection striking the Earth. The book is a "doorstopper" at over 600 pages; it was a very compelling and suspenseful read, easily one of the more important fiction texts to come out of our state in the past five decades.

Calhoun will be at International Astronomy Day, Saturday the 21st at the Highland Road Park Observatory.

The Power Grid lecture in February helped to initiate and facilitate discussions in the local area regarding emergency preparations, energy savings and personal protection.

This lecture will be repeating will new and additional data on Friday 25 January, 7:30pm to 8:30pm at the Highland Road Park Observatory. Once again, the talk is aimed at a general adult audience and has no admission fee.

Tonight (really early Thursday morning) from 12am to 2am on "Coast to Coast AM", Montreat College history professor William Forstchen will discuss the implications for our society if the Power Grid goes down for an appreciable amount of time. This program airs on WJBO (1150AM and 97.7FM).

NOAA and the United States Geological Survey introduced the Geoelectric Field Model this week. It's not real-time data, but it's almost real-time data. If a CME is headed toward Earth, personnel at the Space Weather Prediction Center will issue a warning when the CME reaches Lagrange Point One (about 1.6 million kilometers out). The graphic associated with the model gives a good guess of which parts of the country will be affected the most.

In recognition of the severity of this issue, HRPO will attempt to update and repeat its Power Grid/CME lecture every eleven months. The third edition of "Protecting the Power Grid" will take place on Friday 20 December at 7:30pm. It will include information on the new Geoelectric Field Model.

A signed copy of Lisa Calhoun's Superflare will be the main door prize after the lecture Friday night. Beginning with this lecture, there will always be door prizes immediately following HRPO lectures. The number drawn will correspond to the seat number, so only those seated will have a chance to win.
